The festive holiday season often transforms a pet's typically safe living environment to an unsafe one, complete with potentially toxic and poisonous items. As with children, restrict your pet's boundaries to prevent toxicity or poisoning and monitor their behavior closely for signs they are not feeling well.A few tips to keep the holiday season safe for your pet:
HOLIDAY DÉCOR - From a pet's view, holiday displays are meant to be investigated. Natural pine trees or wreaths, occasionally sprayed with artificial snow and decorated with ornaments are considered low toxicity, but pet's may injure their mouth or paw pads in the disassembling process. More...
FESTIVE PLANTS - Holly berries and leaves are very poisonous and mistletoe is to be hung out of reach for their berries are highly toxic. Gift boxes of lilies, narcissus or amaryllis waiting to sprout are also quite poisonous for pets. Poinsettia, particularly the leaves and stem which is often the entire plant display, has a low toxicity. More...
FOOD - Mealtime is often a main course of meat with owners eager to treat their dog with left-over's. Cooked bones can splinter resulting in sharp foreign bodies in the dog's mouth, esophagus or along the GI tract. Excess fat from meat or poultry skin can cause acute pancreatitis and sudden  dietary changes can result in vomiting or diarrhea. If you won't eat it, think twice about serving your pet a leftover. Yes, holidays are a season of merriment. Your pet, however, may be observing the holidays much different than you by viewing your holiday décor as new toys or treats.
